A few years after, the Northwest Company took possession ofnine cannon stored in the warehouse ofLord Selkirk at what was termed theGovernment House, which a few monthslater became Fort Douglas. These cannonplayed a very prominent part in the historyof the Selkirk settlement from 1811 to aslate a date as 1S70, when Riel, as Presidentof the Provisional Government, commandedthe situation largely through being in pos-session of them. They are now scatteied, most of them being in the custody of privateindividuals who use them to adorn theirlawns, or have consigned them to thelumber heaps of their back iELKIRK GRINDSTONES. THE FIRST GRIST MILL. The stores intended for the settlementwere placed in the York Factory warehouse, and mention is made by Macdonell of thegrindstones, some of which had, by anerror, been left on board the ships. It isvery probable, hewever, that the old-fashioned grindstone now in possessionof the Manitoba Historical society, a cut ofwhich is herewith shown, was one of theidentical stock landed that year. Each half isabout two feet in diameter and an inch anda half thick. One stone being placed on theother, the primitive handle was grasped bythe operator and the upper stone turnedround smartly, as the grain was poured intothe hole in the centre about the pivot pin,the flour produced gradually working out-ward between the stones.
