Burgess and first civil aviation radio beacon, 1927. US physicist George Kimball Burgess (1874-1932) inaugurating the first civil aviation radio beacon, installed at College Park, Maryland, USA. Burgess is present in his role as Director of the US National Bureau of Standards. Many other beacons were established along the thousands of kilometres of civil airways. Burgess was educated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and then at the University of Paris. He joined the National Bureau of Standards in 1903, with a particular focus on high-temperature measurements and pyrometry. He was also (from 1911) editor of the Journal of the Washington Academy of Sciences. Photographed by Harris and Ewing on 30 May 1927.
