Normal breast. False-colour mammogram showing the normal appearance of the breast of a mature, post- menopausal woman (aged unspecified, probably 55 years or more). Mammography is an X-ray technique that is used to examine the soft tissues of the breast. Its principal use is in screening women for breast cancers. The glandular (milk-secreting) component of the breast decreases as a woman approaches menopause. Glandular tissue becomes replaced by adipose tissue, a fibrous connective tissue packed with fat cells. Here, the fibrous tissue appears as yellow striations across the breast.
