The ancient Library of Celsus , a Roman building ruins in Ephesus, Anatolia, Turkey. The library of Celsus was built for proconsul of Asia Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemaeanus as a funerary monument by his son Gaius Julius Aquila . Started around 110AD it was completed during the reign of Hadrian. Todat the library of Celsus is famous as a Roman architectural marvel, and is one of the best and only remaining examples of a library from the Roman Empire. The Library of Celsus is thought to have housed around twelve thousand scrolls, and the only larger libraries of the Roman Emoire were at Alexandria and Pergamum. Beneath the library of Celsus is crypt in which is a decorated marble sarcophagus where Celsus was laid to rest.
