But I con-ceive that I am well within the mark in estimating the white populationalong the Rand as something like 110,000, and it may safely be saidthat the aliens (the large majority of whom are British subjects) at thepresent time outnumber the citizens of the republic. 5. The political situation resulting from these conditions is ananomalous one. The newcomers are men who were accustomed to thefullest exercise of political rights.
