They were of the same age, about seventy-three;Copley, oppressed with infirmities, West, reaping the fruitof his diligent labors and splendid opportunities, still activelyemployed in his studio. Morse carried letters to both thesevenerable artists. West, ever ready to impart to his youngcountrymen the lessons of his long and successful artistslife, received him in his accustomed friendly manner, openedto him the doors of the British Museum, and cordially as-sisted his studies. 171 THE HALL OF FAME. Dunlap, in his history of the arts of design in America,gives a pretty picture of this opening of the career of Morseand Leslie in London. He says the first portrait which theypainted were of each other in fancy costume, Morse beingrepresented in old Scottish dress, witn black-plumed bonnetand tartan plaid, Leslie in the garb of a Spanish cavalier,with Vandyke ruff, black cloak, and slashed sleeves. Thetwo friends, however, had more serious work before them,and resolutely set themselves to perform it. They were, atthis time, intent on the grand and colossal, and both appearto have been engaged on paintings of Hercules, while Allstonwas painting his Dead man restored to life by touching thebones of Elijah.
