Bridge over the River Tay at Perth, Scotland, built by John Smeaton (1724-1792) and still in use today
John Smeaton built the bridge at Perth to open up the north and north east of Scotland to stagecoach traffic from the south which had previously been unable to cross the natural barrier of the River Tay. Smeaton is regarded as the first civil engineer and amongst his most famous buildings was the Eddystone Lighthouse.
