Monument to Alexander Selkirk (one of the models for Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe) in Lower Largo, in the East Neuk (Corner) of Fife, Scotland, UK, on the site where Selkirk was born in 1676. "In memory of Alexander Selkirk mariner the original of Robinson Crusoe who lived on the island of Juan Fernandez in complete solitude for four years and four months. He died 1723 Leuitenant (sic) of HMS Weymouth aged 47 years. This statue is erected by David Gillies net manufacturer on the site of the cottage where Selkirk was born". Date on plinth reads 1885, statue made by Thomas Stuart Burnett in 1886. Defoe's Crusoe of 1719 is considered to be among the first English novels. Robinson Crusoe was based on several real life adventures including those of marooned surgeon Henry Pitman. Selkirk chose to leave his ship to be marooned on Más a Tierra (renamed Robinson Crusoe Island in 1966) one of the Juan Fernández Islands off the coast of Chile. Some describe Selkirk as a pirate/buccaneer.
