False colour scintigram (gamma camera scan) of a frontal view of normal human lungs. The image was obtained by the person inhaling a gas labelled with a radionuclide. Gamma radiation emanating from the radionuclide is detected by a crystal scintillator in the gamma camera, which resolves radiations as flashes of light that are processed by a series of photomultiplier tubes to give a map of distribution and intensity of the short-lived radioactivity throughout both lungs.
