Trachea. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the exterior of the trachea (windpipe). The trachea links the larynx (voice box) to the lungs. Its lining contains mucus-secreting goblet cells and epithelial cells bearing hair-like cilia (not seen). The trachea is reinforced with cartilage rings, which help to keep the airway permanently open.
