The cost of a seat mile on the San Francisco railways,including a reasonable return on the investment, is, ap-proximately, cent. In other words, the cost of aseat mile in the jitney service is at least two and a halftimes the cost of a seat mile of an electric car. If thecomparison was based on the total carrying capacity ofthe two types of vehicle, a considerably larger discrep-ancy would be found to exist. As a matter of fact, the. But the economic condition is even more difficult tomeet. Out of 261 automobiles which were actually inoperation in San Francisco on Jan. 26, eighty-nine wereFord machines, or practically 30 per cent of the totalnumber, the next largest being Overlands, of whichthere were thirty-five. The present price of a Fordmachine, capable of seating four persons in addition tothe driver, is $565.
