A Zabaleen man butchers a pig outside his home in the Cairo suburb of Moqqatam


The suburb is home to a community of around 25000 Coptic Christians known as the Zabaleen which literally means the garbage collectors Originally ordinary peasant swineherds they collected waste to feed their pigs It was then that they discovered that there was money to be made in recycling the waste of such an enormous city
