Of such, I may especially remembermy friends, the late eminent genealogist D. Williams Patterson,of Newark Yalley, N. Y., and the venerable Royal Paine, ofBrooklyn, N. Y., both of whom died in 1893. To myself, thevalue of my historical and genealogical work consists mainly inthe friendships and the memories of friendships which it hasbrought to me. The Stiles Family is of Anglo-Saxon origin. If other familiesclaim that their ancestors came into England with William theConqueror, ours may rest assured that it was in Britain before theConquest. This is evident from the name, and from the most ancientlocalities of the families which bore it. First, as to the name. Lower, in his English Surnames, (p. 84),mentions, among names which describe the nature or situation ofthe original bearers residence, such as Hill, Dale, Wood, etc., thatof Stile, Styles, given in the old Subsidy Roll of the Rape ofLewes
