Technology in commercial aviation. Close-up of the split scimitar winglet on the wing of a TUIfly Boeing 737-800. Aerodynamics and aircraft design.
Winglets (upturned wingtips) have been in use on commercial passenger jets since the 1990s. They regulate the airflow over the wingtips in a way that reduces drag and fuel consumption and extends aircraft range. The split scimitar winglet is a new type of winglet which was developed by Aviation Partners Boeing, a joint venture between Boeing and Aviation Partners Inc., and was brought into service in early 2014 on the Boeing 737-800 and 737-900 models. These winglets can be fitted to new-build aircraft or retrofitted as replacements for the standard winglets on aircraft already in service.
