In the spring of 1854 hehired out lo Pres. Brigham Young asa teamster, and boarded with his fami-ly; he was ordained a Seventy July 1,1855, by Pres. Lewis Robbins, and wasreceived the same day as a member ofthe 2nd quorum of Seventy. He accom-panied Bryant Stringam, Andrew Mof-fatt and others to Cache valley, to putup hay for Church stock, arrivingthere July 28, 1855. Being called byPres. Brigham Young, he left SaltLake City Sept. 12, 1856, to fill a missionto Great Britain, and he crossed theplains with a missionary company, incharge of Apostle Parley. P. Pratt. Af-. ter his arrival in Liverpool he was ap-pointed to the Welsh mission. May 16,1857, he was appointed to organize andpreside over the Cardiff conference,andhe labored with zeal in that positionuntil he was released to return homewith European, Canadian and UnitedStates missionaries during the Buchan-an army invasion of Utah. Togetherwith Elder John L. Smith he arrivedin Salt Lake City June 22, 1858, in ad-vance of the company, with dispatchesfor Pres. Brigham Young. July 22, 185S,he married Rebecca Hendricks, of SaltLake City, Pres. Brigham Young offi-ciating. He moved to Richmond, Cachevalley, and took up land for a home-stead in April, 1860, and succeededStephen Goddard as leader of the Rich- Vol. 1, No. 26. mend choir in May of that year.
