In the Marseilles Museum, two compositions indicatethe functions of this Greek Colonywhich has remained the Gate ofthe East. Puvis de Chavannesmay be said to have created agenre, the decoration of the peri-styles of museums, of those mon-uments so characteristic of ournineteenth centurv, where we comeinto contact with the historical andgeographical spirit of our prov-inces.
