Thetwigs, which hang down so beautifully, are tough, aswell as long and slender; and there can be no doubtthat they would answer well for basket-making; butthis tree is chiefly introduced on account of the beautyof its appearance. It has been said, that the firstwillow was planted in England by the celebratedAlexander Pope. According to the account of thiscircumstance, the poet having received a present offigs from Turkey, observed a twig of the basket inMhich they were packed putting out a shoot. Heplanted this twig in his garden, and it soon becamea fine tree ; from which stock all the weeping-willowsin England have sprung.
