The plants are useful in informal plantings and for backgrounds or screens. The roots will tolerate considerable soil moisture and also resist drought. Only a few flowers in a head open at one time. The brown cap- sules are covered with soft spines and open at maturity to scatter the fine, red seeds. The leaves are large with a broad base on long petioles. Propagation is by seeds.
