While I shall ever think of the Canton Riveras a beautiful kaleidoscope with its shifting colorsof silken sails and pennants, such display ofwealth is probably nowhere else to be seen. How-ever, we have not spent all of our time sight-seeing; we have been to Saddle Rock for drilland small-arm practice, shooting from the landat a moving target on the water, and from theships boats bobbing on the waves at a target onthe cliffs on the shore. Uncle Sam is more generous to the small-armshooting than in any other drill, giving cash prizes of five and ten dollars each. I have beenquite a lucky winner, and am hoping that when. Ihave always longed to shoot Japanese pheasants, and have finally been gratified. It was one daywhen in training for a boxing match that is wait-ing for us when we get back to Yokohama, thatI was running along the levee, I came upon someEnglish lords who wore proud hunting togs andwere wasting good ammunition in the temptation was too great for me. I askedif I might take a shot. The result was I shookmy trainer and stayed with the lords until theirsacks were well filled and they had given me astring of them for our mess. I am almost sorryI did it, for, alluring as the anticipation of pheas-ant shooting has been, the reality is very muchlike shooting hens in your grandmothers chicken-yard. chi-fu- Chapter VIII NANCY LEE DRILL ISLAND TAPS.
