Haemocyanin protein complexes, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). Haemocyanin is a protein that transports oxygen through the circulating fluid in some invertebrates, the haemolymph. Haemocyanin floats free in the haemolymph and binds to oxygen via its copper atom. Haemocyanin subunits stack to form the cylinders shown here (seen on their sides and head on). This sample is from the haemolymph of a crustacean. Magnification: x245,000 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
