The Borghese Faun: A classical marble statue depicts the satyr Silenus carrying the infant Dionysus in his arms. The Parc de Sceaux, Paris, France.
This statue is a marble copy of a classical sculpture from the Villa Borghese Gardens in Rome. It stands in the magnificent Parc de Sceaux beside the Château, which is in the southern environs of Paris. The piece is known as Le Faune Borghese or the Borghese Faun and it represents a scene from ancient Greek mythology, the Satyr Silenus is carrying the infant Dionysus in his arms. In Roman mythology it would represent the Faun carrying the infant Bacchus. There are many versions of this sculpture including examples in the Louvre and the Vatican, they are all based on an original created by the Greek sculptor Lysippos of Sicyon, who lived in the 4th century BC, he is considered to have been one of the three greatest sculptors of the classical Greek era.
