Castell Dinas Iron Age hillfort & Norman castle site, Talgarth, Powys, Wales, UK, looking SW to Mynydd Troed. The site is in a commanding position on the NW edge of the Black Mountains overlooking an important pass (the A479(T)) from the Usk Valley N to Talgarth. The main inner defences of the pre-Roman fort enclose an oval area, divided in half by an E-W cross bank, on the summit of the hill. The outer defences enclose a much larger area on the lower flanks to N, W & S. A sunken track climbs the hill to the N entrance (R) & another hollow way descends NE to a well & then on down the slope to the E. The castle remains are largely in the N half of the hillfort's upper enclosure. The castle was probably built by the Norman de Braose family before 1180, it was destroyed in the early C15th during the rising of Owain Glyndwr. In the C5th it may have been a stronghold of Brychan Brycheiniog legendary saintly King of Brecon one of whose daughters, the virgin martyr St Eluned, is celebrated at Brecon Cathedral.
