Galileo (1564-1642) (Galileo Galilei) the Italian astronomer in prison in a jail cell, engraving by Carel Christiaan Antony Last, 1818-1839


Galileo pictured in his brief stay in a jail cell in 1633 after being suspected of Heresy by the Inquisition for supporting Copernicus's heliocentric theory that the Earth rotated around the Sun. This was commuted to house arrest on the following day where he remained for the rest of his life.
