Yama and Savitri (also spelled Samitri) from a painting by Nanda Lall Bose, a renowned painter, who belonged to the Bengal (India) school of art. In Hindu mythology, Yama is the god of death and judge of humans and is said to be the first mortal to have died. The Samitri was the one who had to slay the animal at the sacrificial rites. The piece is owned by the Indian Society of Oriental Art in Calcutta. In Buddhism, Yama is seen as the wrathful god. The illustration dates to 1913.
