From that date until 1896,the business was conducted by Matthewas head and Alexander and William Ken-nedy, Jr. Sir John was only with thefirm two years, 1868 to 1870, leavingto become chief engineer of the GreatWestern Railway, later absorbed by theGrand Trunk. Sir John was somethirty-five years engaged as chief en-gineer of Montreal Harbor and thoughblind is still retained as their consult-ing engineer.
