Giffard's steam airship. This design, by the French engineer Henry Giffard (1825-1882), dates from 1852. The canopy was filled with hydrogen, and the propeller was driven with a steam engine that had a funnel that pointed downwards. Also seen here is an anchor and a sail used to steer the airship. Giffard flew his airship from Paris to Trappes on 24 September 1852, covering a distance of 27 kilometres. Artwork from the third volume (first period of 1889) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
