Fort Ehrenbreitstein, located across the river from the Monument Kaiser William I, sits atop a 400-foot sloping rock and is believed to have once been a Roman fort. It was unsuccessfully besieged by the French in 1688 and surrendered to them in 1799. The fortress was later restored between 1816 and 1826. In the foreground, Pvt. Elgie Fisher of , 121st. Mach. Gun Bn., can be seen on the pontoon bridge known as the Bridge of Boats.
