At the southern end layers of leaves have beenfound several feet under ground, well preserved, and ly-ing in a strata of sand and earth. This character of thesoil throws an air of probability over the correctness ofthe signification given to the name of the valley—Cochec-ton—which is said by the inhabitants to mean increase,and by the Indians used to describe the formation of itssoil.
