Under his admin-istration the Society fostered three great celebrations,the Centennial of Steamboat Navigation on the westernrivers in 1911, the one hundredth and twenty-fifth anni-versary of the creation of Allegheny county, in 1913,and the Centennial of Pittsburgh City charter in all these celebrations he was chairman of the gen-eral committee. During his administration the Societyalso greatly increased its membership, erected a finebuilding, established a library and museum, and beganthe publication of the Western Pennsylvania HistoricalMagazine. In 1913 Mr. Stevenson was made a member of the. BIOGRAPHICAL 157 Pennsylvania State Historical Commission, and in 1919became its president, an office he still holds. He waslargely instrumental in securing the purchase and pres-ervation of the property of the Harmony Society atEconomy. He is also a member of the PennsylvaniaWar History Commission. During the World War hewas chairman of the Allegheny county Division of thePennsylvania Council of National Defense, and per-formed much valuable service. For many years Mr. Stevenson has been one of themost active workers in the Chamber of Commerce ofPittsburgh, having been a director for a long 1913-15 he was president of the organization. Hewas chairman of the rivers and harbors committee ofthe body, and is now head of its municipal affairs com-mittee. He largely aided in securing a considerablereduction in telephone rates.
