Mars sample return mission. Artwork of an ascent vehicle launching from Mars as part of the proposed Mars sample return mission. This spacecraft would be carrying samples of Martian rocks collected by a rover (in foreground). The ascent vehicle would rendezvous with an orbiting spacecraft that would return the samples to Earth. NASA and the European Space Agency are collaborating on proposals for a mission to gather samples of Martian rocks and bring them to Earth after 2020.
