The Gothic was an .out-growth of the Romanesque. The Decorative Periods lOI FLEtR-UK-LIS and lasted until 1550, although its influences have never beenlost. In the twelfth century the early English or crude Gothicwas culti\ated. Of this, probably the best ex-ample is the Salisbury Cathedral. Then fol-<^ lowed the Second Period, the Decorated or Orna-mental English, which in turn gave way in thefifteenth and centuries to the EloridPerpendicular or Elamboyant style, or Gothic of the Deca-dence. These are the terms given to the three styles sometimescalled Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Gothics. Gothic decoration was the art expression having root in thespread of the Christian religion inEurope. At first crude and heavy,it yielded to the ascendancy of wealthand became highly decorative; the re-turning Crusaders brought Byzantineinfluences and we find the rough stur-diness of the early Gothic giving wayto the style known as DecorativeGothic or Ornamental English. Life in the Middle Ages wasso dominated by religious fervor
