Striated muscle. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a freeze-fractured mammalian striated, or skeletal, muscle fibre. The striations are due to the muscle fibrils, which run left to right. These are made up of the proteins actin and myosin. Skeletal muscle is under voluntary control and moves long skeletal bones. Magnification: x2000 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
