William W. Crum, fifth son ofRichard (1) and Elizabeth (Gardner) Crum,was born January 24, 1807, at Long Branch,New Jersey, where he grew up and learnedthe blacksmiths trade. Having adopted thereligion taught by the Methodist Episcopalchurch, he became a clergyman, and thus con-tinued until the end of his life. He was apioneer minister in Western New York, es-tablishing many churches, and was later con-nected with the Michigan Conference. Dur-ing the civil war he served on the ChristianCommission, bringing comfort to many soldiersof the Union army. He died September 16,1866. He married Sarah, daughter of Henry. SOUTHERN NEW YORK 569 Latham, who was an earnest religious workerin co-operation with her husband, and held inhigh esteem on account of her excellentChristian character and earnest labors in everyenterprise of the church. She was born Feb-ruary 13, 1808, in New York City, died Oc-tober 16, 1891. Her father was commanderof the brig Delia, and was lost at sea. Chil-dren: 1. John, born November 26, 1828; wasa soldier in the First Michigan Cavalry duringthe civil war, and served five years, dying asa result of that service; he married, Decem-ber 22, 1855, Harriet Johnson. 2. RichardDonly, mentioned below. 3. William Henry,born November 23, 1832; has a large stockfarm in Missouri, and is an honored citizen;married, December 18, 1857, Ann Delia, born October 1, 1834; married, Sep-tember 11, 1851
