But in that year Wolsey con-cluded with France a treaty by which this girl of eighteen was towed immediately old Louis XII, then aged fifty-two. She is saidto have been so devoted to dancing and to late hours at night thather husband succumbed to the consequent gaieties on the first dayof the next year. She immediately married her brother Henrysfriend, Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, but without the consentof the said brother or his Council. After some wrath and muchgrumbling a reconciliation was effected, and Marys only survivingchild, Frances, who became the mother of Lady Jane Grey, wasborn in 1517. She seems to have been a warm partisan of QueenKatharine and to have hated Anne Boleyn bitterly. She died inSuffolk in her thirty-seventh year.
