Goddard rocket motors, 1936. Close-up of the four motors used in one of the rockets built by US rocket scientist Robert H. Goddard (1882-1945). Despite receiving little recognition during his lifetime, Goddard is now hailed as a father of modern astronautics. He explored mathematically the feasibility of reaching high altitudes using rocket propulsion, and in 1926 built the first liquid-fuel rocket. His speculations about Moon rockets were ridiculed by his contemporaries, and his achievements were only recognised after his death with the dawn of the Space Age. This test took place in November 1936, in New Mexico, USA. The rocket reached a height of 60 metres.
