U-Boat Crewman Taken Aboard Coast Guard Rescue Plane. Alongside a Coast Guard rescue plane, four bewildered, oil-smeared, almost nude U-Boat survivors of the crew of a destroyed German submarine, wait to be helped aboard the Coast Guard plane. The life-raft had previously been dropped from the air by a Navy blimp. For this rescue, Commander Richard L. Burke, 40, Coast Guard, Elizabeth City, [North Carolina], pilot of the plane, was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross by Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox.
