Coffee trees with ripe berries growing under shade trees, Mweka, Kilimanjaro Region, Tanzania

Coffee tree (Coffea arabica) with berries. The presence of shade trees affects the micro environment of the coffee field and can provide a variety of benefits by reducing the amount of sunlight and conserving water. The coffee berries are ready 8 to 9 months after the plant flowers. The desired berry is shiny, red and firm to the touch. There are both mechanical and manual ways to harvest the berries. When the berries are harvested by hand, only the ripe berries are chosen, leaving the unripe fruit to be picked later. Coffee is one of Tanzania’s major exports, generating more than US$60 million a year, particularly because Tanzania has the climate and altitude to produce speciality Arabica coffee that attracts premium world market prices.
