Urban bus service in Kaliningrad city. White mini-buses at a bus stop adjacent to the Southern Railway Station

Diesel buses are the principal means of public transport in modern Kaliningrad. The city area is served by more than 100 regular routes of traditional bus services and so called "marshrootkas", or "shared taxis" - minibus services with most request stops at higher fare. Most bus vehicles are second-hand Setra and MAN models from various European places, built in early 1990s or earlier. Buses had dramatically replaced tramway, which had been systematically abandoned and withdrawn from many streets starting from late 1990s. The present bus route system and dispatching are far from optimal; one can witness extensive queues at most central stops and traffic jams, containing from just buses. Generally Kaliningrad can be referred to as the only mid-European city, featuring exclusive "Asian-style" public transport system. The modern trolleybus is operated since 1975 on 4 routes. Most of its cars are brand new, the most recent arrived in 2012 from Minsk of Belarus and feature recognizable futurist design. Trolleybus timetable is much less intensive, but as running same way with buses and other road transport, they suffer same problems. The overall operating speed is very low through the system in general and hardly exceeds 10 kms/hr
