LES ENERVÉS DE JUMIÈGES EVARISTE - Edgy OF JUMIÈGES EVARISTE 1880 VITAL LUMINAIS (1822 - 1896) France French

According to a legend born in the nineteenth century, both son of King Clovis II revolted against their father, when he went on a crusade. Tried for rebellion to return it, they were punished by which they had sinned, ie deprived of their strength: the operation consisted in the "excited", ie to burn them the muscle tendons so they could not move. Later took pity, the parents decided to give them to the grace of God. They made the place on a raft without oars or rudder and abandoned them adrift on the Seine. This is the scene chosen by the painter rejecting the literal interpretation of the text, where a servant accompanying princes (this character is present in a preparatory sketches), it isolates them, recumbent in the murky vastness, where sky and water blend. The two princes are inert warmly wrapped in a blanket with Merovingian ornaments on the raft decked with velvet cushions. The candle, which does not go off behind an ornate reliquary indicates the protection of God, while in the distance a white dawn announces a salutary refuge: a monk of the abbey of Jumièges collect and heal. And they will live holy there.
