The outer gate of Linlithgow Palace, inside which lies St Michael’s Church tower topped by a 58ft high anodised aluminium crown.
The outer gate of Linlithgow Palace was built by James V – father of Mary Queen of Scots who was born in Linlithgow Palace -and bears the arms of the four orders of chivalry to which he belonged: the Garter of England, the Thistle of Scotland, the Golden Fleece of Burgundy, and St Michael of France. In 1964 St Michael’s Church tower was topped by a lightweight anodised aluminium crown that replaced the original which was removed in 1821.
