In 1510, Martin Luther, who had been ordained a monk in Germany in 1507, was sent on business for his order to Rome, Once there, he was surprised at the corruption in the the upper levels of the church's hierarchy, In this painting, dating to around 1921, he is shown sitting on steps in Rome, thinking about what he has seen and witnessed, Luther is later known as the father of Protestantism, and Lutheranism is named after him,
