Martin Johnson Heade was inspired not only by the North American landscape, but by South America as well. In 1863 he traveled to Brazil to paint images of “exotic” species of native hummingbirds. He based the works on both direct observation and his collection of hummingbird skins, though he took liberties with the description of the birds’ habitats. American Art
