I sawnothing objectionable in the article andcalled his attention to the fact that hewas reading an American newspaper, andI further stated that, in my judgment,the help we would get from Uncle Samwas necessary and that had the UnitedStates not entered the struggle to takethe place of recreant Russia, Germanymight have forced a peace of her owndevising upon the Allies, to which heobjected, stating definitely that he wouldrather see the Allies beaten than havethat bluffer take any of the credit. Thecruelty of this remark was sufficientlyeffective to stun both of us, to whom itwas directed, and while we felt like beat-ing him up, or handing him over to thepolice, we ignored him; but not withouttaking his mental measure and conclud-ing he was either crazy or profoundlypro-German, preferably the former. I fully realize that Canada could existwithout her neighbor; but it would notbe a very modern existence, neither. would it be a very progressive one. ButI also realize that we can get along muchbetter with the United States than with-out. We are absolutely dependent onUncle Sam for a whole lot of our com-forts. Take hard coal for one—yet not-withstanding there was a great shortagelast year due to the war, it is a fact,the homes of Canada were more com-fortably heated than the homes in theUnited States, and I know that the ordersfrom Washington relating to the distri-bution of certain materials were positive,as a prominent official there told me thatCanada was being treated as one of theStates. This spirit prevails and gov-erns the actions of Uncle Sam in all hisdealings with Canada. Canadians should not forget thatAnglo-Americans wrote the Declarationof Independence and the Constitution ofthe United States; they produced GeorgeWashington, Abraham Lincoln andWoodrow Wilson; they were the makersof trails and the givers of laws; theyopened up the American wilderness;
