The Poolburn Viaduct crosses 37m above the Ida Burn on the Otago Central Rail Trail on New Zealand's South Island. The trail is 152 km long.
The Poolburn Viaduct crosses the Ida Burn on the Otago Central Rail Trail on New Zealand's South Island. The viaduct took some 3 years to build and is the highest viaduct on the trail at 37 metres. It has a span of 108 metres. The trail is 152 km long and runs between Clyde and Middlemarch. Average riders take 3-5 days to complete the trail. It follows the route of old Otago Central Railway, a branch line that ran from Cromwell to Dunedin. The railway was started in 1877 but the final section between Clyde and Cromwell wasnt completed until 1922. It was decommissioned in the 1980s and has since been turned into a long distance cycle and walking route. Many of the small townships along the old route now provide services for the trail users.
