For ten years this en-terprise proved a disappointment, as Forest Avenue haddone; but the beautiful summer homes that have beenperched upon the rocky knolls in that vicinity during thelast few years have redeemed all the promises which in-duced the building of the road. Each added expenditure for the convenience of summersojourners has increased the income by taxes thus broughtinto the town. The last and most expensive drivewayundertaken for the pleasure of these adopted citizens is abeautiful stretch of macadam running along Beach Islandbetween Little Harbor and the ocean. Turner, and John Bates, with their associates, were incorporated under the State law. The first meeting was held at Smiths Tavern, December 1, 1845, when the business wasplaced into the hands of the following trustees: — Paul Pratt, J. Turner. Lot Bates. James C. Doane. Daniel T. Lothrop. Zenas Stoddard. A. H. Tower. Job Cushing. Thomas Smith. Nichols Tower. Francis L. Bates. Levi N. Bates. Solomon J. Beal. The bank was kept by Levi N. Bates thirty-seven years in an upper room of his ownhome, above his apothecary store, until his successor, the present treasurer, Caleb Lothrop,was chosen; then it was moved downstairs, where it remained until the new bank buildingwas completed in 1898.
