View S of three of the Iron Age Arras Culture burial mounds at Danes Graves, Kilham, East Yorkshire, England, UK. A C2ndBC inhumation cemetery, originally of around 500 square barrows made of chalk rubble with a little soil. Between 1721-1909, 106 of the barrows were excavated, 175 still survive but are mainly obscured by dense scrub & vegetation in deciduous woodland. Oblong graves with rounded corners are covered by low mounds & surrounded by shallow square or rectangular ditches. The burials are mostly crouched inhumations accompanied by grave goods including bracelets, brooches, beads & pottery. One special grave contained a cart burial, a dismantled two-wheeled chariot with two crouched skeletons plus bronze, iron & jet bracelets, bronze & iron brooches & 'objects', glass beads & handmade clay pots used as food vessels. Part of the Arras Culture brought to East Yorkshire in the later 1st millennium BC by immigrants from south-west France. The barrows are on private land & included on the Historic England Heritage at Risk Register.
