Mando dancer at O-eshiki festival in Ikegami, Tokyo, Japan

Mando are heavy, tree-like poles that Japanese people carry at matsuri or festival time. Some carry large pictures or branches that resemble cherry trees others are lit with laterns for night-time festivals. Supporters will also play Taiko drums and dance along the street as the mandos wind their way slowly back to the shrine.
