Mammoth carving on ivory, 19th-century artwork. This carving dates from the time of the Magdalenian culture, known for their carved bone, antler and ivory artefacts. The Magdalenian people, a culture of early modern humans, lived in western Europe from 15,000 to 7000 years ago, during the Upper Paleolithic period. This carving is from the La Madeleine rock shelter in south-western France. Artwork from the 22nd volume (second period of 1898) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
