Heart and ECG. Computer artwork of the heart, an electrocardiogram (ECG) trace and red blood cells (erythrocytes). The heart is a muscular pump that moves blood around the body. Deoxygenated blood enters the right side of the heart from the body and is pumped to the lungs, where it is oxygenated. The blood then returns to the left side of the heart and is pumped around the body. The ECG trace shows the electrical activity of the heart. Contractions are caused by electrical signals between the upper (atrial) and lower (ventricle) chambers. The tall peak indicates the pumping action of the ventricles.
