Petition against the new mega-project in Lagoa dos Salgados Lagoa dos Salgados is one of the best preserved coastal lagoons of the Algarve. It is classified as an IBA (Important Birds Area) by SPEA and BirdLife International. It is also one of the most popular places for bird watching in the Algarve region and it is annually visited by thousands of national citizens and foreigners and internationally promoted as an essential site for nature tourism. Unfortunately, over the years constant abuses took place, affecting the integrity of the lagoon ecosystem (illegal water abstraction, poaching, illegal grazing, open air disco, etc). The conservation of Lagoa dos Salgados has been constantly a concern for SPEA and Almargem, who have made many efforts during this time to ensure the protection of its natural values, requiring a management and protection status appropriate for this place. Currently, an international petition is circulating, by citizen initiative, to stop the mega-project that was given green light to move forward in Praia Grande, on the western bank of Lagoa dos Salgados (on the opposite bank of the failed Herdade dos Salgados mega-project.
